Google AI Overviews Boost Search Queries by 10% in Q2 Results

Google’s latest quarterly earnings reveal a surprising trend: AI Overviews are actually driving more searches, not fewer. The tech giant reported that AI Overviews contribute to over 10% additional queries for search types where they appear, challenging widespread assumptions about AI reducing search behavior.

This data comes as AI Overviews now serve 2 billion monthly users, marking a significant shift in how people interact with Google Search. Rather than replacing traditional searches, these AI-powered features appear to be encouraging deeper exploration and follow-up queries.

AI Features Drive Record Search Revenue Growth

Google’s Search division generated $54.2 billion in Q2 revenue, representing a robust 12% year-over-year increase. This growth coincides with expanded AI feature deployment across Google’s search platform.

CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the connection between AI capabilities and increased user engagement during the earnings call:

“We are also seeing that our AI features cause users to search more as they learn that Search can meet more of their needs. That’s especially true for younger users.”

The executive emphasized how artificial intelligence is expanding search possibilities:

“We see AI powering an expansion in how people are searching for and accessing information, unlocking completely new kinds of questions you can ask Google.”

This marks the first time Google has provided specific metrics on how AI Overviews influence user behavior, moving beyond simple usage statistics.

Visual Search Experiences Gain Momentum

Google reported continued expansion in visual and multi-modal search capabilities, particularly among younger demographics. Users increasingly combine tools like Google Lens and Circle to Search with AI Overviews for comprehensive information gathering.

The company’s AI Mode, featuring conversational search interfaces, now serves over 100 million monthly active users across the United States and India. Google plans to enhance these capabilities with advanced features including:

Token Processing Volume Doubles in Three Months

Pichai noted the rapid acceleration:

“At I/O in May, we announced that we processed 480 trillion monthly tokens across our surfaces. Since then we have doubled that number.”

This dramatic increase demonstrates the velocity at which AI integration is occurring across Google’s ecosystem, including Search, Workspace, and Cloud services.

Google Cloud delivered $13.6 billion in quarterly revenue, marking a 32% year-over-year increase driven largely by AI tool adoption.
